during は　確かに「間」という意味ですが、「何か（名詞）の間」のように使います。

例：during the lesson (レッスンの間)　

　during the movie (映画の間)

「誰かが何かをしている間」といった文章ならば、　during ではなく　while を使ってください。

I bought it while I was in America. ○
