～　よみうりカルチャーの英会話講師、ダミアン・ベイフォードさんが遭遇した

面白いエピソードを英語でお届けします　～

After the earthquake, like many people, we have been trying to save electricity.

 We had an electric dishwasher.  However, it used a lot of electricity,

so we have stopped using it.  Now I help my wife with the dishes every

evening after dinner.  I wash and she dries and puts the dishes away.

 

My son laughed as he watched me washing the dishes. 

 

“We have a new, big dish-washer!”he said. 

“It's called ‘Dad’!  Aren't you tired?”he teased me.

 

“No, I'm okay.”I replied. “And anyway, we're going to get a new,

small dishwasher soon.”

 

“Really?”

 

“Yes. It's called ‘Son’!”

 

His eyes widened in panic and he ran to his room to finish his homework.

今月は日本語がとても上手な英会話講師のスコット・キャリー（Scott Carey）

さんです。大学講師としても活躍されています。

Q.1 Where did you grow up?

 

A.1 I'm an American. I was born in the State of Ohio, but moved to Tempe,

    Arizona when I was 12 years old. I only remember a few things from

    my childhood in Ohio, so I consider Arizona the place I grew up.

 

Q.2 What do you like best about living in Japan?

 

A.2 I really appreciate that Japan is a very civilized, functional society.

    People show respect and are very considerate. I feel very

    comfortable and find it easy to live here.

 

Q.3 Is there anything you would like to do in the future?

 

A.3  Actually, I am living my dream. So for me, it's about keeping

    things together and working smoothly.

    Of course I want to keep challenging and improving myself... but at

    my age the future is now! I want to hold on to it the best I can!

 

Q.4 What surprised you most in Japan?

 

A.4 The civility of the people, even in crowed cities. The attention to

    detail, especially in serving food. People seem to take pride in

    doing a good job, no matter their position or pay. But what

    surprised me most, "punctuality"! The trains are on time, people are

    on time, things start on time.

 

Q.5 What do you like doing in your free time?

 

A.5 Well, recently I keep pretty busy, so when I'm free I mostly just

    relax. Rent a DVD, drink with friends, read, or listen to music.

    I also love traveling and getting out to explore the city. A couple

    weeks ago I was lucky enough to find some time to visit an art

    gallery.

 

Q.6 What was the best movie you saw last year?

 

A.6 Oh my... this is a hard question to answer.

    I watch so many different kinds of movies.

    An Eddie Murphy movie does stick out though, titled "Meet Dave".

    Very funny and entertaining. Insightful too!

Q.7  Is there anything that you are into recently?

    ( food, game, drink, TV program etc.)

 

A.7 For the last year I've been doing Japanese "Ko Budou".

    It's an ancient martial art that is the foundation of all current

   "sport" martial arts (Kendo, Judo, Karate etc.). It's very good

    physically and mentally.

 

Q.8 What is/was studying Japanese like?

 

A.8 I only really "studied" Japanese for a year. I didn't really like

    it,but am glad I did it. Most of my Japanese was learned from

    working at an Izakaya. It was very practical and real.

 

Q.9  Is there anywhere you'd like to go in Japan?

 

A.9 I really want to travel around Wakayama. I've been to all the main

    Islands except Okinawa. I really enjoy traveling around Japan.

 

Q.10 What movie would you recommend for students who want to learn

     English?

 

A.10 Actually, I usually recommend TV shows. There are many to choose

     from nowadays and they tend to be more dialog / verbal interaction

     based. Also each situation is resolved in 20-40 minutes.

     Whatever you choose, you should like the program and identify with

     the characters. You need to watch the program many times over with

     subtitles while pausing and rewinding frequently.

     DVDs are a great way to develop your English!

 

Q.11 Do you have any advice for students learning English?

 

A.11 Stop worrying about mistakes! Take a chance and try to communicate.

     Mistakes are a natural part of learning, it's how we develop. Enjoy

     yourself and have fun! Learning a language is a journey, an endless

     adventure. Of course there will be difficult times... but keep

     trying and the door to many wonderful experiences will open.

6.【菅野先生の英語ちょこっと箸休め】

 

～　英会話講師・通訳ガイドでもある菅野先生の英語にまつわるちょっと面白い

　　話を不定期にお届けします　～

 英語には日本語にない音がいくつもあります。

中でも「a」は日本人にとって最も難しい発音のひとつではないでしょうか。

口を横に開いて「エ」と「ア」が混ざったような感じで「ェアー」と発音します

が、cat, apple, happy, Thank youなど、私たちがよく使うお馴染みの単語にも

この音が入っているので、やっかいです。「お風呂」の「bath」もそのひとつ。

実は数年前、この発音を間違えたために恥をかいたことがあります。

 

外国人旅行者数人と一緒に電車で伊豆の温泉地に向かう途中、温泉に入る時の

注意事項を説明しようと、

“When you take a bath, please take off your clothes and enjoy it naked.”

と話し始めました。

 

日本の温泉が初めての外国人は水着を着て入りたがることが多いので、「お風呂

に入る時は、服を脱いで裸を楽しんでください」と言ったつもりが、「bath」の

「a」を間違えて「bus」（乗物のバス）になってしまい、

“When you take a bus, please take off your clothes and enjoy it naked.”

「バスに乗る時は服を脱いで・・・」と、おかしな説明になってしましました。

 

電車の後はバスで移動することになっていたため、一瞬真に受けた人も。

その後大爆笑になったことは言うまでもありません。

7.【リー先生の僕も書いてみた！～英文エッセー～】

 

～　よみうりカルチャーの英会話講師、リー・フォウラーさんのエッセーを英語

でお届けします。テーマは英文添削講座の課題と同じものです　～

 

今回は5月の課題で「A funny thing happened」についてです。英文添削講座を

受講中の皆様、5月の英作文は覚えていらっしゃいますか？リー先生の作文と読

It is unfortunate that the funniest things often involve a victim and

embarrassment. This is one such story.

 

I had only been in Japan a couple of weeks and I was taking advantage

of the cheap rail travel tourists can enjoy. On my final day before

returning to Tokyo I found myself in Fukuoka. I was in need of liquid

refreshment and I saw a sign that said 'Pub'. At the time I didn't know

'pubs' in Japan are somewhat different to pubs in the UK. They of course

involve karaoke. I really don't like karaoke as I have a phobia of

singing in public. Actually I don't even sing in private as I am

completely tone deaf!

 

  Sitting at the bar next to me was a man in his late 50s wearing business

clothes and drinking from a half empty bottle of whisky. He very kindly

asked for another glass and invited me to help him finish the bottle. He

then asked me to sing. I politely turned down his request, but he wasn't

taking no for an answer.

 

He said, “Sing a Beatles song!”I claimed I didn't know any Beatles

songs. A very weak lie I admit, but it was all I could think of.

 

“Yes, you do!”he said. “Sing ‘Yesterday’.”

 

“‘Yesterday’?”I replied, “I really don't know it.”

 

He then started to sing the opening line “Yest...”At that point, his

false upper front teeth flew out of his mouth and bounced on the bar on

to the other side of the counter. The young lady who was serving picked

them up, rinsed them and placed them on a coaster in front of him. He

hadn't seen where they had gone and was searching for his molars on the

floor. It was left to me to tap him on the shoulder and point out his

grinning dentures on the bar. He then placed them back in his mouth and

fell rather silent with embarrassment. Soon after, he asked for the bill

and left.

 

I did feel rather sorry for him, but at least it saved me from singing.

I shouldn't laugh, but every time I hear the song 'Yesterday' I think of

him.

9.【外国人講師の～　どうやって日本語をマスターしたか？　～】

 

 ～よみうりカルチャーで外国語講座を担当している外国人講師にどのように日

本語を勉強したのかを伺うコーナーです。皆様の語学学習のヒントになれば幸い

です～

 

今回登場するのは、イタリア語講師のマッティオ・サヴァレセさんです。

マッティオさんはイタリア北東部のトリエステ出身。ヴェネツィア大学で日本語

を勉強しました。

①日本語を勉強することを決めたきっかけは何ですか？

 

将来、アジアでの旅行ができるような仕事を目指して、大学でアジアの言語を勉

強しようと思いました。高校の級友がヴェネツィア大学で日本語を勉強したいと

言った影響もありました。

 

②おすすめの勉強方法を教えて下さい。

 

会話、聞き取り、読解から始めて、その後文法を勉強をすることで整理します。

文法からはじめる方法はお勧めしません。

 

③日本語を勉強していて、難しいと感じる部分はありますか？

 

最近日本語を難しく感じなくなりました。最初は漢字を覚えるのが一番難しかっ

たです。

 

④イタリア語の魅力は何ですか？これからイタリア語を勉強したいと思っている

方へＰＲがあれば教えて下さい。

 

イタリア語はイタリアでしか話されていない言葉です。しかし、イタリア語の元

はラテン語なので、イタリア語を覚えると、英語を含めて他の言葉も覚えやすく

なります。しかもスペイン語の国で、イタリア語は意外と通じるんですよ。

11.【編集後記】　

 

梅雨が明けて、猛烈な暑さが続いています。皆様、体調を崩されてはいませんか。

私達の勤務する事業本部は最寄駅から徒歩１０分。この時期、会社到着後は汗が

滝のように流れ落ちます。近くの公園で朝の散歩中の犬もどことなくバテ気味な

様子です。宮沢賢治の「雨ニモマケズ」の一節、「夏の暑さにも負けぬ丈夫な体

を持ち・・・」を頭の中でリピートさせながら毎日出勤しています。この猛暑に

打ち勝つ気力と体力を身につけなければいけませんね。

７月期の講座がスタートしました。夏の暑さを吹き飛ばす、楽しい講座が盛りだ

くさんです。多くの講座で見学や一日体験ができますので、是非お越しください。
