1.【ダミアンの山あり谷あり～英文エッセイ～】

～よみうりカルチャーの英会話講師、ダミアン・ベイフォードさんが遭遇した
面白いエピソードを英語でお届けします～
　今回はペットに関してのお話です。

Do you have any pets?  We don't have any pets at the moment,
but my son used to have some goldfish. 
Naming pets is very difficult. 
When my son got his first goldfish I asked him to name it. 
At first he couldn't think of a name at all.
 Finally he came up with the rather unimaginative name of  “Fish”.
Some months later, he won another goldfish at a local festival.
 Again my wife and I asked our son to give it a name.
“I know what goes well with Fish!” He suddenly exclaimed.
“What?” I asked.
“Chips!” He replied.
That is how our goldfish got their names, “Fish and Chips”.

5.【外国人講師の横顔紹介】

～よみうりカルチャーにはたくさんの外国語講座があります。
　講座を担当している講師の方をご紹介していきます～

　今月は英会話講師のダニエル・ガスタブソン(Daniel Gastabson)さんです。

（各箇所に日本語での簡単なポイントを載せてあります）

Q1.Where did you grow up?

A: I grew up in a small suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, in the
   U.S. And I also lived in Montreal, in Canada, for four
   years before coming to Japan.

 ジョージア州は米国の南東部の州です。地図上ではフロリダ州の上。

Q 2.What do you like best about living in Japan?

A:I guess I like the convenience of never needing to go very
  far for anything. You can do almost anything in Tokyo, and
  it's just a short train ride away. It's very different
  from Georgia. Over there, there wasn't a whole lot to do,
  and everything was very far apart, so you can't do
  anything without a car.

Q3.Is there anything you would like to do in the future?

A:I'd really like to continue my education. I hope someday I
  will have the opportunity to go back to school and get a
  master's degree, or perhaps even a Ph.D.

Q4.What surprised you most in Japan?

A:I had a lot of Japanese friends in university, so not that
  much surprised me about the people when I arrived. But,
  there were many little things about life in general. For
  example, there aren't many trash cans here. And it's very
  difficult to get a waitress's attention at a restaurant
  here. (It's embarrassing for me to call across the room.
  In the states, we just make eye contact.)

Q 5.What do you like doing in your free time?

A:My hobby is a little difficult to explain. It's called
  DTM. It stands for Desk Top Music. To give a very simple
  explanation, it is using a computer to make music. In my
  apartment I have a lot of electronic musical instruments
  and recording devices connected to my computer. In fact,
  in my case, I have far too much stuff to fit on top of a
  desk, so the name DTM isn't entirely appropriate. It's
  more like a small recording studio. Anyway, whenever I
  have any free time, I'm always doing something with that.

 説明文に出てくる単語もちょっと複雑です。

Q6.What was the best movie you saw last year?

A:I don't really watch many movies. In the past year, I've
  only seen two movies. Avatar, and The Imaginarium of Dr.
  Parnassus. I didn't really like Avatar, so I guess The
  Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was the best.

 どちらも映画のタイトルです。

Q 7.Is there anything that you are into recently?
   ( food, game, drink, TV program etc.)

A:Recently I started building a synthesizer out of spare
  parts from an old 1980's home computer. It's a DIY project
  organized by a group of synthesizer enthusiasts I know
  through an online message board. I actually already have
  many synthesizers, but this is the first time for me to
  build one by myself. I'm having a lot of fun and learning
  a lot from the people I meet on the internet who are
  involved in the project.

Q8.Tell us about your family.

A:I'm getting close to thirty years old now, so maybe when
  people ask me this, they are expecting to hear about my
  wife and kids. But still, I can only talk about my parents
  and brothers for now. I am the middle of three brothers.
  My parents got married at a very young age, and my father
  looks quite young, so sometimes people mistake him for my
  brother too. My older brother is married. He and his wife
  have two boys as well.

Q9.In what ways are Japan and your country alike?

A:I think the biggest similarity is the personality of the
  people. Japanese people usually think that Americans are
  very different from themselves. But when they think of America,
  they think of New York and California.
  They rarely have any experience with southerners. I think the
  southern American way of thinking and the Japanese way of
  thinking is really quite similar. People even tell me that
  I act "too Japanese" or that I should act "more American"
  when really, I'm just being a typical Georgian. So,
  although I'm on the other side of the world, I never
  really feel like I am far from home.

6.【ガーデニング日記＆ちょこっと英単語】

～ダミアンさんの畑の話題と、そこから学べる英語表現をご紹介します～

　プランターにまいていた野菜の種が成長して、今小さな苗が出てきています。
バジル、いんげん、ズッキーニ等・・・。大きくなったら、畑に移すのだとか。
種は英語でseed、苗になるとseedlingとなります。
　ズッキーニという野菜、英語圏内でも地域によって名称が変わります。北アメ
リカ等では「zucchini」、イギリスでは「courgette」。ちょっとややこしいで
すね。
　ズッキーニはかぼちゃと同じように雌雄異花のため、受粉（pollination)が必
要。最近蜂の数が激減したため、自然に任せることができないのだとか。花が咲
いたら雄花の花粉を綿棒に取って雌花に入れる作業が必要とのこと。
　手で受粉させることは「hand pollination」と言います。
　植物を育てるのは手がかかりますね。


7.【日本人講師の～どうやって外国語を獲得したか？～】

～よみうりカルチャーで外国語講座を担当している日本人講師に、外国語攻略方
法を聞きます。皆様の語学学習の励み、助けになれば幸いです～

　今月は英会話講師の増永朋子さんです。
　増永先生は恵比寿センター・町田センターで英会話クラスを担当しています。
以前は京都で中学・高校の英語教諭としても教壇に立っていらしゃいました。


①英語に興味を持ったきっかけ、好きになったきっかけは？

大昔のお話ですが、公立中学・高校の１教科として出あいました。
ほかの科目に比べて、苦労せずに学べたという消極的な理由で、
大学では英文学を専攻し、私立中高の英語教師になりました。

②どうやって英語を獲得しましたか？

根がケチなせいか（？）、英語を専攻したことにこだわり続けたことが、
グローバル社会のいまになって、プラスに作用していると思います。結婚で仕事を辞めましたが、
子育て中も翻訳や英語講師を続けました。その後、執筆業（日本語）も仕事に加わりましたが
英語を続けてきたことで、何度か海外取材に行く機会も得られました。その経験がまた英語の
授業に生かせていると思います。
でも、外国語習得に到達点はありませんね。日々、精進です。

③おすすめの勉強法は？

外国語習得には、常に接することがとても大切ですが、あれこれ食い散らかすより、
まずひとつのテキストを完全にモノにするほうがいいと思います。
たとえば、カルチャースクールのレッスンで習ったところは声に出して読み、
すべて暗記するなど、ですね。

④英語の魅力は？

・ドイツ人と会っても、インド人と会っても、会話は英語。世界の人々をつなぐグローバル・ランゲージ
という点です。

・主語から動詞へと続く構文なので、自分の意見をはっきり述べることになり、頭の整理になります。

⑤その他、ぜひ伝えたいこと

英会話と英文法は、別物ではありません。
ノンネイティブの大人が英語を話そうとするとき、英文法は強力な味方です。

8.【リスニング英語に挑戦】

～英語は読めるけど、聞き取りが苦手・・・という方も多いのでは？リスニング
英語に挑戦してみるコーナーです～

（Windows Media Player等、mp3を再生できる環境をご用意ください）

①まずは内容を見ないで音声を聞き、どの程度理解できるか挑戦してください。
聞き慣れない単語もあるかと思いますが、頑張ってください。

＊パソコン上のボリュームコントロールを確認して、音声が出る設定に変えてください。
（英語の原文は下に載せてあります↓）

②下の英文で内容をチェックしてください。

③英文を見ながら音声に合わせて声に出して読んでください。
　さらに英文を見ないでシャドウイングにトライしてみてください。
（音声を聞きながら、同じ文章を後から追いかけるようにして口に出す）
　シャドウイングは英語のリズムとイントネーションを身につける良い練習方法
　です。

Saint George
A long time ago, there was a terrible dragon.
The dragon lived in a swamp near a city.
The dragon terrorized the city.
The people of the city fed the dragon 2 sheep every day,
but one day they ran out of sheep.
There was no choice but to offer a human sacrifice.
The people drew lots to decide who would be eaten.
One day the King’s daughter drew the short straw and
she was taken to the swamp to be eaten.
By good fortune a knight called George chanced to ride by.
When the dragon appeared he bravely attacked it.
He killed the dragon and saved the princess.

キリスト教の聖人、ゲオルギウス（英語ではジョージ）のドラゴン退治についてのお話でした。
ちなみにイングランドの旗である白地に赤い十字は「セント・ジョージ・クロス
（聖ゲオルギウスの十字）」と言います。

　上野公園へお花見に行きました。人の多さに驚き、そして人混みの中から聞こ
